Osteopathy (osteopathic medicine): A complete system of medical care with a philosophy that combines the needs of the patient with current practice of medicine, surgery and obstetrics. Emphasizes the interrelationship between structure and function, and has an appreciation of the body's ability to heal itself.

Ostéopathie (médecine ostéopathique) : Méthode complète de soins médicaux dont la philosophie se conjugue avec la nécessité pour le patient d'accéder à des soins conventionnels médicaux, chirurgicaux ou obstétriques. Elle s'appuie sur les interrelations entre la structure et la fonction et reconnaît les capacités du corps à s'auto guérir.


Osteopathic physician: a person with full unlimited medical practice rights who has achieved the nationally recognized academic and professional standards within his or her country to practice diagnosis and treatment based upon the principles of osteopathic philosophy. Individual countries establish the national academic and professional standards for osteopathic physicians practicing within their countries.

Ostéopathe (ostéopathe médecin - terme usuel aux USA) :Personne possédant l'ensemble des droits conférés par le code d'exercice médical, qui a obtenu les standards académiques et professionnels reconnus sur le territoire national l'autorisant à effectuer un diagnostic et un traitement basés sur les principes de la philosophie ostéopathique. Chaque pays établit les critères académiques et professionnels pour les ostéopathes exerçant sur son territoire.

Osteopathic philosophy: a concept of health care supported by expanding scientific knowledge that embraces the concept of the unity of the living organism's structure (anatomy) and function (physiology). Osteopathic philosophy emphasizes the following principles: 1. The human being is a dynamic unit of function. 2. The body possesses self-regulatory mechanisms that are self-healing in nature. 3. Structure and function are interrelated at all levels. 4. Rational treatment is based on these principles.

Philosophie ostéopathique : Approche de la santé étayée par une large connaissance scientifique qui prend en compte le concept d'unité du corps à travers sa structure (anatomie) et sa fonction (physiologie) : 1-l'être humain est une unité fonctionnelle dynamique. 2-le corps possède ses propres mécanismes de régulation lui permettant de s'auto guérir. 3-structure et fonction sont en interrelation à quelque niveau que ce soit. 4-un traitement rationnel est fondé sur ces principes.

Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM): The application of osteopathic philosophy, structural diagnosis and use of OMT in the diagnosis and management of the patient.

Médecine manipulatrice ostéopathique : Application de la philosophie ostéopathique, évaluation de la structure et utilisation d'un traitement ostéopathique manipulatif lors du diagnostic et la prise en charge d'un patient.

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT): The therapeutic application of manually guided forces by an osteopathic physician (US Usage) to improve physiologic function and/or support homeostasis that has been altered by somatic dysfunction. OMT employs a variety of techniques including:

Traitement ostéopathique manipulatif : Application thérapeutique d'une force manuelle guidée par un ostéopathe, dans le but d'améliorer les fonctions physiologiques et favoriser l'homéostasie qui ont pu être perturbées par une dysfonction somatique.
